LIFE INSIDE THE LAB
What is your work/research topic? Deciphering the sense of touch

What was your best day of science? Every day that we get more than one technique to work at the same time!
What was your worst day in science? The day that the cleaning crew accidentally fried the hard drive holding the only copy of weeks of work.
What did/are you study at university? Biochemistry
What does your average day look like? Get coffee, talk to scientists in my lab about their experiments, write, read, repeat.
LIFE OUTSIDE OF LAB
Where did you grow up? Outside of Boston
What profession did you think you would be when you were a kid? Don’t remember
What do you do to relax outside of lab? Play sports, especially soccer
Do you have any pets? Fish
Do you have any fun hobbies? Making stuff
Is there any one event or person who/that made you want to be a scientist? No single event, just staying curious about the world!
Why were you drawn to science? Did you ever consider another career path? How close was your schooling related to your current job? I thought being a plumber would be cool. Being a night owl, I imagined a career specializing in an after-hours plumbing service.
What was your biggest challenge during your degree? Finding a project that stuck.
What was your biggest motivation to obtain your PhD? So I could keep doing science.
What is your best advice for girls interested in science? If you are curious, like to make things, and solve problems—science is a great way to do all of those things in your career.
Why do you think it is important to have more women in STEM? By including mostly white men, we miss out on important perspectives. Especially for curiosity-driven research and for technology…
What would you listen to while writing? Music. Loud. This year, I’m planning to listen to a lot of Bowie and Prince.
Organization nut, or curated chaos? In the lab: organization nut; everywhere else—curated chaos. I spend my allotment of neatness in the lab.
What color socks are you wearing? The socks I am wearing now are dark blue with large polka dots and the words “Funky Socks” written on them.
